Having had four very successful charters of ESPRIT the trustees decided in
2001 to set up something new and hence The Scholarship was established.
It is intended to enable young people, aged about 18, to participate in
major Tall Ships Races in other parts of the world other than Europe.

In its first year it awarded a scholarship to help them take part in the
American Great Lakes Race. In 2002 two youngsters were granted a scholarship to sail with the Canadian Sail Training Association and it assisted
in the arrangements for two Canadians to sail with the London Sailing Project.

In 2003 four young Britons will again be assisted with their air fares and voyage fees to sail in Eastern Canadaian waters.

In future years it is hoped to send people to
events such as a race from Australia to New Zealand.

The young people being supported each year will require considerable funds
to cover their expenditure for airfares, ground travel, voyage fees,
specialised clothing and spending money.

The fund will therefore need to raise extra cash in order that it can
support both its new Scholarship as well as its regular bursaries back
in Britain.

2006 International Scholarship update

The James Myatt Trust had another successful year, funding four trainees to travel to and sail in foreign waters.

This year, JMMT sent two British youngsters sailing aboard the Toronto Brigantines in Canada, and two Canadians aboard the OYC boat John Laing, on the 50th Anniversary Tall Ships’ Race from St Malo to Lisbon. Both sets of trainees had successful trips, with one of the Canadian Trainees, Steph Murphy, posting the following photos.

Due to the continued success of this initiative, plans are afoot for the 2007 Scolarship!
